Transaction Enhancements

Jump to:

In addition to the obligatory transaction data (Date, Payee, Amount and Account), transactions can be enhanced with categories, tags, and attachments. These features help you enrich your spending data and give you more power over how you sort and review your data within Lunch Money!

Categories

Categories are set up on the Categories page, and are an essential way to organize your transactions. Categories also dictate how associated transactions will be treated throughout Lunch Money. To learn more about category properties, please see here.

A transaction can only be assigned one category, and uncategorized transactions are highly discouraged! The category cell for uncategorized transactions will appear in red:

How to quickly add or change transaction category

The category of a transaction can be added or changed directly within the table view on the Transactions page:

  1. Locate the transaction in the table and click on the relevant cell in the Category column

  2. Once clicked, a dropdown menu will appear with all of your active categories

  3. Scroll in the dropdown to locate the desired category, or type to search

  4. Click on a category name to set it and it will automatically be saved to the transaction

If you type to search for a category that you don’t already have set up, the option “Add category” will appear. Clicking on that will open a confirmation dialog to set up a brand new category. Once confirmed, the category is created on the Categories page and the new category is automatically applied to the transaction from which it was created.

Please keep in mind that adding a brand new category directly from a transaction will result in the creation of a plain expense category, without any category properties.

Tags

Tags are a great way to further organize transactions. Tags are much more flexible to use than categories as they would be more specific and not associated with as many transactions as a category would. Moreover, unlike with categories, a transaction can be associated with multiple tags!

Some uses of tags may include tracking transactions associated with a specific event (eg. birthday party, wedding, etc.), a trip (eg. Brazil 2020, Italy 2021, etc.) or a particular project (eg. kitchen renovation, bedroom makeover).

How to assign tags to transactions

If you already have tags set up on the Tags page, you can easily add tags to any transaction via the Transactions page:

  1. Locate the Tags column and hover the mouse cursor over the cell for the relevant transaction row to see an “Add” button appear

  2. Click on “Add” and a drop-down menu will appear with all available tags

  3. Locate the tag by scrolling through the menu, or search by typing in the search bar

  4. Click on a tag to add it to the selection (you can add more than one)

  5. To confirm, click on “Done”, or anywhere outside of the dropdown box.

All added tags will then be listed in the relevant cell under the Tags column:

How to remove tags from transactions

If you already have tags assigned transactions, you can remove them from the Transactions page:

  1. Locate the transaction and click the arrow on the far right of the row to open the 'Transaction Details' panel

  2. All assigned tags will display under the 'Transaction Tag(s)' section

  3. Click the small "x" icon next to any tag that you wish to remove

To confirm the changes, click on "Save Changes" at the bottom
