Period Picker

At the top-left corner, click on the period picker to change the date range you'd like to view the data for. You can select a predefined date range option from the drop-down menu, or enter a custom date range:

Chart View Options

At the top-right corner, use the toggle to switch your view between 'By account' and 'By type', depending on how you’d like your data grouped:

By Account

View your chart data by account. Each line graph represents one account and you can use the filter option (accessible to the right of the "By Account" button) to view only a limited set of accounts for quick and easy comparisons.

By Type

View your data broken down by asset and liability types.

Display Options

At the top-right corner, click on the gear icon to open the display options:

Show [percentage change/percentage of total/no percentages]

Use this display option to configure whether or not the tooltip should show the percentage change from the previous month for each asset and liability line items, or the allocation percentage of the asset/liability class. You can also choose to not show a percentage at all.

[Show/Hide] breakdown of accounts

This display option is only available when viewing by type. You can use this option to configure whether or not the tooltip should show a breakdown of assets and liabilities by type.

[Show/Hide] closed accounts

Use this display option to configure whether or not to include closed accounts in the net worth chart and table. When hidden, balances of closed accounts are excluded from totals.

[Show/Hide] subtypes

This display option is only available when viewing by type. When you choose to show subtypes, the account types (e.g. Cash, Investment) are further broken down into their subtypes (e.g. Checking, Savings) in the tooltip.

Filtering

At the top-right corner, click on the funnel icon to filter by specific accounts (when viewing by account), or by specific types and subtypes (when viewing by type):

Managing your data

Sometimes you may want to update your historical account balances. A few reasons you may want to do this are:

  • Account syncing was in error mode and a latest balance was not fetched

  • You want to backfill historical account balances to get a more complete picture of your net worth over time

The Net Worth Tracker doesn't automatically backfill based on historical transactions. This is because we don't currently have a reconciliation feature that would allow us to easily extrapolate your previous account balances.

You can view and manage your historical account balances in a table view by clicking on "View/Edit Data" at the top-left corner:

Updating existing balances

To edit historical account balances:

  1. Go to the Net Worth pagearrow-up-right (Home > Net Worth)

  2. Click on "View/Edit Data" at the top-left corner

  3. Make sure the period picker is set to your desired date range

  4. Click on any cell in the table to revise the data (to remove a balance, delete all the contents)

  5. Press Enter on the keyboard to save

Note: The current balance cannot be revised for accounts enabled for automatic bank syncing via Plaid, as the balance

Adding historical balances

To add historical account balances:

  1. Go to the Net Worth pagearrow-up-right (Home > Net Worth)

  2. Click on "View/Edit Data" at the top-left corner

  5. Press Enter on the keyboard to save

Sorting the columns

The data in each column in the table can be sorted by ascending or descending alphabetical or numerical order. To sort the data, simply click on the header of the column. The first click will sort by descending order, and clicking again will sort by ascending order:

Exporting to CSV

If you'd like to export your accounts and historical balances, you can do so by clicking on the download icon at the top-right corner. The CSV file will contain the account names, account status, account types, and all existing balances.

Understanding your data

At the end of every month, Lunch Money takes a "snapshot" of all your current account balances (including investment accounts, crypto holdings, credit cards, loans, and more) and records it as the balance for that month. This then becomes a historical account balance and is fully editable by the end user.

The balance shown for the current month is synced with the current account balance, shown also on the Overview page's Accounts Summary and Accounts page. If the account is a synced account, this balance is not editable by the end user until it becomes a historical account balance.

How Net Worth is calculated

Your net worth is calculated as follows:

Net Worth = Total Assets βˆ’ Total Liabilities

Lunch Money uses the account type to determine how the balance affects your net worth. Positive asset balances (e.g. cash, investments) will increase your net worth, while positive liability balances (e.g. credit cards, loans) will reduce it.

Your net worth is calculated monthly, based on the account balances recorded for that period. If you have accounts in multiple currencies, balances are converted to your primary currency (based on the historical conversion rate for that date) before being included in the total.

How account balances are recorded

At the end of every month, Lunch Money takes a "snapshot" of all your current account balances (including investment accounts, crypto holdings, credit cards, loans, and more) and records it as the balance for that month. This then becomes a historical account balance and is fully editable by the end user.

How to read the Net Worth chart

The Net Worth chart shows how your finances change over time.

  • The X-axis (horizontal) represents time, showing the month and year

  • The Y-axis (vertical) represents the value of your assets, liabilities, and net worth.

You can hover over any point on the chart to see detailed values for that period.

When viewing "By type", the chart combines both bars and a line to visualize your data:

  • The green line represents your net worth over time

  • The blue bars represent your total assets

  • The red bars represent your total liabilities

Each point or bar reflects the value for that specific period. Depending on your display options, the bars may be segmented by types or subtypes, shown in different shades of blue and red.

When viewing β€œBy account”, the chart displays your data using line graphs:

  • The green line represents your net worth over time

  • Each additional line represents an individual account

Each point reflects the value of that account for the selected period. Depending on your filters and display options, accounts may be shown or hidden to help you focus on specific trends.

FAQ

Is there a way to backfill my net worth data

There isn't currently a way to automatically backfill your net worth data since this data is captured once per month at the end of the month. If you edit account balances, or add or remove transactions after a snapshot has been recorded, those changes won't affect past periods. However, you can click here to learn how to manually add or edit the data yourself.
